President Iotova Condemns Attacks on Commercial Vessels as “Flagrant Violation of International Law” 2026

Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova strongly condemned the latest drone attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea close to the country’s coastline in a statement released by her press secretariat on Tuesday. The President described as “a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and international maritime law”.
Iotova said: “Freedom of navigation and the security of supply chains are seriously threatened, posing a significant risk to Bulgaria. The escalation of the war has led to an increase in incidents near the Bulgarian coast and is turning the Black Sea into a war zone.”
She praised the swift response by the Maritime Coordination and Rescue Centre in Varna, which rescued the entire crew of one of the two vessels along with sailors from the other ship. “All efforts by the Bulgarian state, with the involvement of the Armed Forces, Border Police and the Executive Agency Maritime Administration, are focused on searching for and rescuing survivors,” Iotova said.
According to her, the situation requires Bulgaria, together with its allies and partners, to make every effort to ensure a swift investigation into the incidents and to de-escalate the conflict through diplomacy and negotiations. The recommendations adopted by Bulgaria’s Consultative Council for National Security on October 7 “must be implemented as a matter of urgency,” the President insisted.
