President Lauds Government for Opting for Broad Public Consultations on Administrative Reform 2026

Balgarianovinite.com President Iliana Iotova told journalists in Pazardzhik on Thursday that she supports the government’s approach of first holding broad public consultations on administrative reform with all stakeholders. The President said administrative reform cannot be carried out in a piecemeal manner and must be carefully designed so as not to paralyze the administration. She added that unfilled posts should be reviewed and each ministry should prepare an assessment.
Iotova expressed confidence that the reform would also receive support from the opposition.
On Wednesday, the government appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Galab Donev as head of the Administrative Reform Council. According to Prime Minister Rumen Radev, the reform has two main goals: improving efficiency and minimizing costs. “I want to state clearly that there will be no mass layoffs that would lead to a loss of administrative capacity or legal risks,” he said.
While in Pazardzhik, President Iotova also took a journalist’s question about discussions between the Prime Minister and US President Donald Trump on visa-free travel for Bulgaria. Iotova said she hopes for a swift decision from the United States on visa waiver eligibility criteria. “I personally believe we will have a positive outcome,” she added.
She noted that there are specific criteria for lifting visa requirements, but said that an important EU principle has long not been implemented — that reciprocal measures should apply when visas are denied to citizens of a member state. “This issue has been left unresolved for many years,” the President said, adding that Bulgaria is entitled to raise the matter.
The President visited Pazardzhik on the occasion of the city’s holiday, according to the presidential press service.
