The president must give voice to the problems and concerns of Bulgarian citizens, listen to them and amplify their voices, presidential candidate Andrey Gurov said during a discussion with residents of Botevgrad on Monday.
“A country must not grind to a halt when the name of the [prime] minister changes. On the contrary, there must be continuity. This is precisely where the president’s role lies, as a balancer and a check on the executive branch,” Gurov said.
In his view, the president should support the government when it performs well and speak out when mistakes are made. “The president is not a knight in shining armour who comes to the rescue. He cannot do the government’s job for it. But he can be a strong voice, voicing the views of the people,” Gurov said.
He outlined four commitments: “First, I will always name the problems, the appropriate solutions and who pays the price. I will ensure that the rules apply equally to everyone. I will work for a secure and independent Bulgaria, and I will be president of all Bulgarians, regardless of whether they live in the capital, in Botevgrad or in any other corner of the country.”
