Presidential candidate Andrey Gurov said he imagined that in 20 years Stara Zagora would once again be the country’s energy heart, but with new capacity, technologies and jobs. He held an open discussion in Stara Zagora on Saturday.
“For years, it has been common knowledge that coal will not last forever and that a transition is necessary. Many governments have made promises but failed to complete their work, starting things but never seeing them through,” Gurov said.
He added that he envisaged Stara Zagora as a town where young people graduating from university would not think about leaving but would stay and work there. “I imagine Stara Zagora as a town where the future is being built rather than one waiting for the past to end,” he said.
Gurov said the president’s role was to act as a corrective and a balancing force. The State must not grind to a halt whenever a new government takes office or a minister is replaced, he said during the discussion.
“I will not promise to be a saviour. What I can commit to is clearly stating what the problems and solutions are, and who will pay the price. I will ensure that the rules apply equally to everyone, and I will work for Bulgaria’s security and independence, including its energy security. I will be president of all Bulgarian citizens, regardless of where they come from,” Gurov said.
At the beginning of the meeting, those present were introduced to members of the nomination committee for the Gurov-Kandev presidential ticket.
