Presidential candidate Andrey Gurov, nominated by an initiative committee for the October 25 election, began his campaign tour in Vratsa on Sunday. At a meeting with supporters, he said Bulgaria needs a president who defends citizens’ interests and brings the country’s main problems to the centre of public debate.
“That is why I am running, because Bulgaria really needs a president who stands behind the interests of Bulgarian citizens and is ready to defend them at any cost,” Gurov said.
According to him, the president cannot solve all of the country’s problems but has the power to focus public attention on them, explain the cost of decisions and bring together institutions, local authorities, businesses and citizens in the search for common solutions.
Gurov outlined three main priorities: security, stability and independence. He said security could no longer be taken for granted and Bulgaria should uphold a clear position that borders cannot be changed by force.
“When the Government works well, the president should support it, but when the majority makes mistakes, the president cannot remain silent,” Gurov said.
He made four pledges: to uphold the same rules for everyone, defend Bulgaria’s security and independence, speak openly about the cost of decisions and be president of all Bulgarian citizens.
Gurov was introduced by Dr Georgi Ezekiev, a member of the initiative committee, who said that since the period of political confrontation between the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the Union of Democratic Forces (UDF), there had not been an easier choice.
