Prime Minister Radev Says Oligarchy Has Been Removed from Political Power 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Speaking to journalists in Pleven on Friday, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said that the government is taking concrete measures to fulfill its programme. “We have eliminated the oligarchy from political power. They are now outside it,” Radev said. He was in the city to attend the ceremony at which graduates of the Georgi Benkovski Higher Air Force School received their first officer ranks and diplomas.
Radev reviewed the formation of cadets and sergeants from the military school, and presented an award to the class’s top graduate, Siyana Yankova. Later, together with Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov, he attend the unveiling of bas-reliefs dedicated to aviation pioneers Tsvetan Lazarov and Assen Yordanov at the school’s Off-site Aviation Education Complex.
Radev gave a briefing following a meeting with the regional administration, which he described as highly productive. Also attending were Regional Development Minister Ivan Shishkov, the regional governors of Pleven and Lovech, Ivan Petkov and Plamen Hristov, Pleven Mayor Valentin Hristov, his deputy Hristo Kochev, and Kaloyan Kadriyski, manager of the city’s water supply and sewerage company.
The Prime Minister said that the government was consistently fulfilling its election promises through clear and concrete steps. “We have taken the risk this year of running a higher deficit so there would be a solution to people’s problems,” Radev said.
Asked about the drone that entered Bulgarian airspace and exploded approximately 100 metres inside Bulgarian territory after approaching from the direction of Romania, Radev said that the Defence and Foreign Ministries had still not received answers to their inquiries to Ukraine, adding that a response should have been received by now.
Asked whether he agreed with Deputy Prime Minister Ivo Hristov’s statement on Bulgarian National Television (BNT) that the oligarchy had taken control of Bulgarian media, including public-service media, with BNT being the exception, the Prime Minister said that both media and politics depend on public trust. “I hope that media will start working just as institutions have, so that public trust can be restored,” Radev said.
Responding to a question about the killing of Georgi Kuzev at Youth Hill in Plovdiv, Radev said the government would propose legislative amendments, which should be ready by the end of September.
According to the Prime Minister, the proposal to allow members of the Supreme Judicial Council elected by the parliamentary quota to be chosen with fewer votes than currently required constitutes a protective safeguard.
Radev also said that the Foreign Ministry had prepared a diplomatic protest note over the case of Iva Mihaylova, who has been accused of a serious offense related to road traffic safety in North Macedonia.
In Pleven, Rumen Radev also commented on Burgas being chosen to host the Eurovision Song Contest. He said he believed the city would succeed in representing Bulgaria with distinction.
