Balgarianovinite.com The prosecution service in North Macedonia’s Gostivar said on Tuesday that it has launched an investigation for “serious crimes against the environment and nature caused by actions resulting in the contamination of drinking water.” The news comes after an epidemic was declared in the town on July 20 over a stomach illness outbreak.
As at Monday, some 3,100 visits to a medical professional over such health issues had been registered.
The investigation is targeting the acting director of public utility company Komunalec in Gostivar, as well as the company’s technical director and the head of the Water Supply, Sewerage, and Construction Works department. The three suspects were arrested on Monday.
According to a statement from the prosecuting magistracy, on June 25 the individuals under investigation ordered company employees to install three submersible pumps in a surface water channel containing harmful substances, near the city’s drinking water overflow chamber, for the purpose of testing the pressure. After more than 1,000 residents of Gostivar sought medical attention for stomach problems, an inspection was conducted on July 16 that determined two of the submersible pumps were still operating and transferring water containing coliform bacteria into the water distribution system.
At the direction of the prosecution service, the Institute for Public Health conducted an analysis of samples from four locations, which revealed that the water is heavily contaminated and cannot be used for any purpose due to the presence of coliform bacteria. One of the samples also showed high levels of chlorine.
