Balgarianovinite.com The protection of the rights of citizens who identify as Bulgarians in the Republic of North Macedonia is a matter of European values and the rule of law, MEP Nikola Minchev said during a debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on the European Commission’s annual reports assessing the Western Balkan countries’ progress towards EU membership.
Minchev noted that constitutional amendments and good-neighbourly relations are not new requirements for North Macedonia but commitments already embedded in the agreed negotiating framework.
He added that the hostile rhetoric expressed by public figures and signs of tension and aggression should not be overlooked.
Referring to the recent arson attack on vehicles belonging to the Bulgarian diplomatic mission in Skopje, Minchev said the incident underscores the importance of a consistent institutional response to all forms of hatred and violence.
The MEP noted that the protection of the rights of Bulgarians is not an issue on which compromises can be made.
Minchev reiterated that Bulgaria remains committed to supporting North Macedonia’s European integration, adding that progress in the accession process depends on mutual respect and the fulfillment of commitments undertaken by all parties.
