Public Enthusiasm for Radev Government Begins to Fade, Poll Finds 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Trust in the Cabinet in June is 45% and mistrust is 30%, according to a MarketLinks/bTV poll whose results were made public Friday. One and a half months after the Radev cabinet took office, the first visible signs of waning public enthusiasm for the new government and the majority party supporting it are beginning to emerge, the analysts say.
It is a nationally representative poll taken during the June 13-21, 2026 period among 1,005 respondents aged 18 and over via in-person and online interviews.
The public assessments of the country’s direction “have reached a plateau”, to use the analysts’ words, following the sharp improvement following the April 19 snap general elections where Progressive Bulgaria of former President Rumen Radev won a landslide and now controls a majority in Parliament and a government headed by Radev himself.
The analysts say that these observations are valid even before the government announced how much new debt it intends to take out (, and before it unveiled its 2026 budget draft.
The draft budget has a strong focus on spending restraint and has already drawn strong reactions. As regards the public debt, it is expected to increase by EUR 2.2 billion in 2026, in addition to the already approved ceiling of EUR 3.8 billion, reaching EUR 37.7 billion, or 31.1% of GDP, by the end of the year. In 2027, public debt will rise to EUR 44.7 billion, or 33.2% of GDP, while in 2028 it is projected to reach EUR 50.5 billion, or 35.2% of GDP.
The first weeks of the regular government have left mixed impressions among the public, with around 60% expressing a positive overall view. These attitudes are largely shaped by party affiliation. Even so, around 10% of Progressive Bulgaria voters believe the government is making mistakes, while one in ten agrees with the claim that the current administration will continue the same model of governance it had pledged to replace.
The poll also shows that President Rumen Radev is losing public trust, while distrust is increasing. “It is evident that respondents who had previously been neutral are shifting toward negative assessments rather than remaining undecided,” say the analysts. The youngest voters appear to be the most disappointed. This is neither an urban nor a party-specific phenomenon, but one that is evenly distributed across different types of settlements and affects part of the electorate of the main political force.
Despite declining public trust, Progressive Bulgaria has marginally increased its electoral potential by attracting respondents who had previously been undecided about whom to support. Its electoral backing is about 2 percentage points higher than a month earlier.
GERB, Continue the Change, and Democratic Bulgaria (DB) are not gaining new supporters, but they are consolidating their existing electorates around a shared negative assessment of the government.
On a positive note, Parliament is showing a positive trend in restoring public confidence during a period in which the government is losing support. Trust in the cabinet is 22% and mistrust is 52%. Market Links believe this may be due to the normalization of political conduct and rhetoric among parliamentary parties following the absence of anti-system and radical-leaning smaller political formations.
What Market Links calls “the populist measures” introduced so far do not appear to be producing the expected results. The government’s “Care Basket” initiative for affordable groceries, is dividing society rather than uniting it, while the argument that the Radev Cabinet has inheriting a difficult fiscal situation appears to convince only about half of the public and around 30% believe it is being used merely as an excuse by the new administration..
Over the past month, the government has lost 11 percentage points in its net approval rating. The decline comes despite the government’s decision to maintain wage levels in the public sector, introduce measures against high prices, and largely refrain from implementing reforms with clearly defined fiscal objectives.
Bulgarian citizens continue to show a high willingness to participate in elections. This may be interpreted positively as a sign of increased engagement with the political process and the development of a stronger civic culture.
