Balgarianovinite.com Prime Minister Rumen Radev said Bulgaria stands with Germany in response to any hybrid and other attacks. At Parliament’s Question Time on Friday, he was answering a question from GERB-UDF MP Georg Georgiev about the German government’s accusation that Russia was behind an attempted attack involving an explosives-laden drone at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
“Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry responded appropriately and firmly – we support our economic and investment partner Germany,” Radev said.
He said he had discussed the matter with European Council President Antonio Costa in Sofia on Thursday and there were no complaints directed at Bulgaria or its Foreign Minister. “To me, this was a reckless action by Russia,” Radev said, describing the case as complex and extremely worrying.
“Usually, when firm positions are expressed following political statements, specific facts are provided through the security services. We have not received any such information yet,” Radev said. He added that the conclusion pointing to a Russian hybrid attack was based on the findings surrounding the drone, noting that this was the wording used by Germany’s senior leadership.
Radev said the major question was whether Germany would respond.
“The collective West is trying to achieve a conventional victory over Russia without taking into account the fact that it is the world’s largest nuclear power and that we cannot counter its hypersonic weapons, as we see every night over Kyiv,” Radev said. “This heightens the risk, and I believe Europe must finally start factoring in that risk and talks should begin as soon as possible, because this war is expanding geographically and the risk is increasing day by day.”
For his part, Georg Georgiev said: “The source of the attacks was clearly identified by Germany – Russia is behind this hybrid action. Weeks ago, reputable European media outlets clearly warned that Russia would seek to carry out provocative actions on European and NATO territory, and we are seeing this happen – this is a fact.”
Georgiev also said: “There is nothing here to make us doubt that the Russian Federation is behind this, yet you are still not saying whether information was shared with your Foreign Minister in Ireland that would allow you, too, to say, ‘Yes, Russia is a threat and has waged an aggressive, unwarranted and unjustified war in Ukraine, and for that reason we stand in solidarity with this country’.”
The Prime Minister replied: “Europe is not a contest in conformism, and if you insist that Bulgaria must necessarily become part of the escalation, I have no such intention. Of course we stand firmly with Germany, our biggest ally, but we must retain a measure of common sense.”
“Drones are flying towards Poland, Romania and Bulgaria, but we must finally start insisting on other things. I believe Bulgaria is among those countries calling for this to happen as soon as possible,” Radev said.
“In my view, Europe can exist without Russia, but Europe will find it difficult to exist for long against Russia,” he added.
