PM Radev Pays Official Visit to Poland, Discusses Defence Industry Cooperation with Counterpart Tusk 2026

Prime Minister Rumen Radev and the delegation he is leading arrived in Poland on an official visit on Thursday. The Bulgarian delegation includes Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Investment and Industry Alexandar Poulev, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov and Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev, as well as business representatives.
As part of the visit, Radev met with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. They discussed the war in Ukraine, defence industry cooperation, the energy sector, and economic ties, it transpired at a joint news conference after the meeting.
Tusk emphasized that cooperation with Bulgaria is a priority for Poland. He stressed that Europe’s future belongs to countries such as Poland and Bulgaria and highlighted the traditionally good relations between the two countries.
He called for consistent support for Ukraine. He said he was aware of the differences between Poland and Bulgaria, but stressed that the two countries share the view that the war between Russia and Ukraine must end.
The two sides also discussed economic cooperation, with a focus on the defence industry, Tusk said, adding that he was ready and willing to further strengthen this cooperation.
Radev said that the only way Bulgaria can keep its MiG-29 fighter aircraft operational is with Poland’s help. Bulgaria will also rely on Poland for the maintenance of its F-16 fighter jets. Radev said he will welcome the continuation of defence cooperation because “we have no other option” for maintaining the MiG-29s.
The Bulgarian Prime Minister also said the two countries share the belief that strong economies require connectivity as well as reliable, secure and affordable energy. In this respect, the two countries serve as entry points for US liquefied natural gas into the Central and Eastern European region – Poland from the north and Bulgaria from the south, he added.
With regard to nuclear energy, Radev said the two countries are pursuing parallel projects involving AP1000 technology, with three reactors planned in Poland and two in Bulgaria. In his words, it is very important to exchange experience and expertise on these extremely complex projects, as Bulgaria has more than 50 years of experience in nuclear energy, albeit with Russian-built reactors.
The Bulgarian Prime Minister described cooperation with Poland in the defence industry, high technology, space and the industries of the future as particularly promising.
Radev said that nearly 500,000 Polish tourists visited Bulgaria in 2025, with their numbers increasing every year. Trade between the two countries is growing rapidly and has now exceeded EUR 3 billion annually. The Prime Minister added that Polish investment in Bulgaria to date amounts to more than EUR 650 million.
