Balgarianovinite.com An increasing number of middle-class Bulgarians are choosing to spend their holidays in Greece, and the reasons behind this should be carefully analyzed by the tourism sector, Deputy Prime Minister Ivo Hristov said during the inaugural meeting of the Council for Tourism Reforms, held at the Council of Ministers on Tuesday.
Hristov welcomed Tourism Minister Ilin Dimitrov’s initiative to bring together representatives of government institutions and the tourism industry, describing the format as the right approach for discussing the sector’s challenges.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that at the start of the peak summer season there are signs that occupancy rates at Bulgarian tourist facilities are lower than expected, while an increasing number of Bulgarians are opting for a vacation in Greece. The trend warrants a thorough analysis, including of pricing, service quality, and the overall competitiveness of Bulgaria’s tourism offering, Hristov added.
He said that even though Bulgaria offers a broad variety of tourism experience, the short summer and winter seasons remain among the industry’s main challenges. The government can support the sector’s development, he said, but cannot solve all of the problems facing businesses on its own.
Hristov also said that hosting the Eurovision Song Contest will place Bulgaria in the global media spotlight and attract a significant number of foreign visitors. He described the event as an opportunity to strengthen the country’s international image and accelerate efforts to develop a unified tourism brand that clearly presents Bulgaria as a travel destination.
The Deputy Prime Minister expressed hope that the Council for Tourism Reforms would serve as a platform for open dialogue between the government and the tourism industry and help identify solutions for the sector’s long-term development.
