As of October 13, 2026, large and significant reservoirs were 64.81% full (4,236.1 million cubic metres). Their total storage volume is more than 12% higher than it was in mid-October 2025. This fill rate is the highest in the last eight years for the same calendar period, the Ministry of Environment and Water reported Tuesday.
The Ministry manages water resources in 52 major and complex reservoirs. The available water volumes in these major and complex reservoirs, by primary purpose, are allocated for drinking and domestic water supply (79.06%), backup drinking and domestic water supply (47.14%), irrigation (49.46%), and power generation (69.77%).
Today and overnight into October 14, river levels are expected to rise as a result of rainfall. Starting in the afternoon hours of October 14 and 15, river levels will generally decline, though rises are possible in some areas due to runoff. Starting in the evening of October 15 and overnight into October 16, further rises in river levels are expected in the Danube Basin. On October 16, rises are expected in the Eastern Aegean Basin and in some mountainous areas of the Western Aegean Basin. Water levels will remain below the warning thresholds, according to Ministry data.
The Environment and Water Ministry urges local authorities to implement the measures outlined in the 2022-2027 Flood Risk Management Plans and to monitor the latest hydrometeorological information and forecasts for hazardous weather events. According to the weather forecast from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) for Wednesday, rainfall will be persistent in the Rhodope Mountains and Southeastern Bulgaria, while in other regions it will gradually ease off and stop. The NIMH has issued a yellow code warning for 14 regions, mainly in the eastern half of the country, the Ministry of Environment and Water added.
