Balgarianovinite.com Romanian authorities have declared a nationwide state of alert for the month of August due to a drop in electricity production, caretaker Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan announced at a press conference, streamed live on the internet on Friday. The decision was taken earlier during the day at an extraordinary meeting of the caretaker government.
“We have declared a state of alert at the national level for the month of August due to a drop in electricity generation caused by the drought and low water levels in rivers and, especially, in the Danube,” Bolojan, who also serves as caretaker Energy Minister, said. The flow rate of the Danube has fallen to less than half of the usual levels for this time of year, Bolojan added, “we are approaching critical levels”.
“There is a significant risk that we may have to shut down a second reactor at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant. This would mean a loss of approximately 20 percent of national electricity generation,” he added.
Bolojan said that, due to the complicated situation, Romania will import electricity from Ukraine and is holding similar discussions with Bulgaria and Greece regarding the evening hours.
“Earlier today, I spoke with the Ukrainian Prime Minister regarding the provision of support over the coming period through electricity generation from one of Ukraine’s nuclear power stations. We will receive emergency assistance from Ukraine during the evening hours when demand peaks. Transelectrica [the electricity transmission system operator in Romania] and Nuclearelectrica [Romania’s sole nuclear energy producer] will hold talks with the Ukrainian side. Ukraine has agreed to assist us on a commercial, market-price basis. This is a reciprocal arrangement,” he explained.
The outgoing prime minister also announced that a branch of the Danube River will be diverted to the Cernavoda NPP to ensure the safe operation of Reactor No. 2. The government will allocate RON 7 million to carry out an emergency intervention to redirect the flow from the Bala Canal to the power station.
