Balgarianovinite.com Romania has carried out a controlled shutdown of Unit 2 at the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant, the Romanian Ministry of Energy said in a press release received at BTA on Thursday.
The shutdown took place on Wednesday evening, just one day after the plant’s operator, Nuclearelectrica, took Unit 1 offline. The simultaneous shutdown of both reactors is unprecedented in the plant’s history and was prompted by record-low water levels in the Danube River.
The measure is entirely precautionary and is intended to prevent damage to the facility’s three main cooling pumps. Any failure of these pumps would require months of complex repair work.
The Cernavoda NPP typically generates around 20% of Romania’s electricity. Following the shutdown, the country is increasing electricity imports to offset the shortfall, which has been exacerbated by higher demand for air conditioning during the current heatwave.
In an interview with Digi24, caretaker Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, who is also serving as interim energy minister, said there is currently no risk to households or the economy. He added that electricity prices remain unchanged because supply is covered by long-term contracts for the year.
Bolojan said: “The Cernavoda power plant has been shut down because of the low flow of the Danube. Just consider this: in previous years, at this time of year, the river’s flow was between 3,900 and 4,500 cubic metres per second. It is now 1,600 cubic metres per second and continues to decline, meaning it is less than half its normal flow. For the Cernavoda plant to operate, it relies on water pumped from a reservoir supplied by the Danube.
