Balgarianovinite.com Romanian Government Deputy Secretary-General Cristina Traila has resigned after being charged in a corruption case. She announced her resignation in a Facebook post following a meeting with outgoing Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan.
Traila’s resignation came after Romania’s National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) charged her in a case involving a businessman from Vaslui County. She is accused of complicity in using influence or official authority to obtain money, property or other undue benefits.
In her Facebook post, Traila maintained her innocence.
“I am completely innocent and have not the slightest doubt that this matter will be clarified during the criminal investigation. I am also aware that this media scandal is artificial and far from accidental; it is undoubtedly being used to damage the image of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, the Romanian Government and the National Liberal Party,” she wrote.
Prosecutors accuse Traila of assisting poultry farmer Fanel Bogos in efforts to replace the head of the Vaslui Sanitary Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate. According to prosecutors, the businessman sought the official’s removal through a series of interventions and contacts at the political level.
Traila is a lawyer and former MP for the National Liberal Party. She failed to win another term as a Vaslui MP in the December 1, 2024 parliamentary elections, according to Romanian daily newspaper Adevarul. She was subsequently appointed to her government post by a decision signed by then Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu.
Adevarul also noted that Traila’s name had previously been mentioned in other cases involving alleged conflicts of interest.
