Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria has made headline news in Romania not only because of the early parliamentary elections held on Sunday. Over 20 local TV channels, newspapers and news agencies have reported that Bulgaria will be the guest of honour at Bookfest, the international book fair in Bucharest, from June 3 to 7.
Romanian media quote the Culture Ministry in Sofia as saying that this is an opportunity for Romanians to rediscover contemporary Bulgarian literature and for Bulgarians to explore the cultural diversity in the neighbouring country through books, authors, translators and publishers.
The Bulgarian delegation will be comprised of more than 20 members, including widely acclaimed author Georgi Gospodinov, who won the International Booker Prize in 2023. In Bucharest, Gospodinov will take part in a series of debates, book launches and autograph sessions.
The Bulgarian Culture Ministry said the delegation will also include other major figures of contemporary Bulgarian literature who are recognized and highly appreciated in Romania and were published there recently, such as Joanna Elmi, Elena Alexieva, Nadya Radulova, Kostadin Kostadinov and Georgi Gospodinov as well as one of the best-known Bulgarian writers of children’s books, Petya Kokudeva.
Grigore Arsene, President of the Romanian Publishers Association, commented: “Bulgaria has a culture which, although very close to us geographically and historically, remains still insufficiently known in our country. I hope that this Bookfest edition will help us discover it better.”
In addition to events dedicated to literature and the Bulgarian literary landscape, the country’s participation as guest of honour will include analyses of the book market and discussions about trends in publishing. Opportunities for grants and funding programmes will also be addressed, as well as topics related to writer and translator residencies, literary festivals, and exchange programmes.
The Bulgarian stand at Bookfest is being organized by the Bulgarian Book Association with the support of the country’s Culture Ministry. It will offer a wide variety of books in Bulgarian, and Romanian-language editions of well-known Bulgarian literary works.
Partners in the project are Bulgaria’s Foreign Ministry and Tourism Ministry, the National Palace of Culture (NDK) in Sofia, the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), the Bulgarian Book Association, the Sofia Literary Agency, and the Reading Sofia Foundation.
