Balgarianovinite.com The European Union’s future budget was a key focus of talks between Romanian President Nicusor Dan and European Council President Antonio Costa on Thursday. The two met at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace in Bucharest. Their joint statements were broadcast live online.
Dan said: “Romania is seeking an ambitious European Union budget. We want significant funding for cohesion policy and agriculture, precisely in order to bridge the differences between citizens of the various European countries.”
He stressed that Romania attaches great importance to the competitiveness pillar.
“Here, our goal is to reduce the gap between European nations by ensuring that companies from less developed European countries, such as Romania, have access to competitiveness funds,” the Romanian president explained. Dan said he believed bureaucracy had slowed the absorption of EU funds and called for greater flexibility in this regard.
During their nearly two-hour meeting, Nicusor Dan and Antonio Costa also discussed the EU enlargement process and Moldova’s future accession to the bloc, as well as security and support for Ukraine.
“We also discussed energy, both specific aspects and the broader issue that will be on the agenda of the upcoming European Council meeting, focusing on ways to achieve a common European energy market,” Dan said.
For his part, Costa stated: “The current geopolitical context is fundamentally different from that of 2020, when we adopted the EU’s last budget. We now have a new reality that requires a new structure for the Multiannual Financial Framework. It must enable us to develop defence and competitiveness while continuing to support cohesion and agriculture.”
Costa stressed that collective security is closely linked to the protection of the EU’s eastern borders, including the Black Sea, and noted that violations of Romanian airspace and recent incidents involving maritime drones were deeply concerning.
“We stand firmly behind Romania. Romania’s security means Europe’s security,” Costa said.
He thanked Romania for its support for Moldova and added that Russia’s efforts would not diminish European support for Ukraine.
Later on Thursday, Costa will visit Bulgaria and Greece. He is touring European capitals as part of preparations for the European Council meeting in October, whose main focus will be the European Union budget for the 2028–2034 period.
