Balgarianovinite.com The Bulgarian research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) continues to draw strong public interest, Retired Flotilla Admiral Boyan Mednikarov said in Nessebar on Tuesday.
The vessel’s visit marked five years since it joined the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy and four successful expeditions to Antarctica.
Mednikarov said public interest in the vessel showed support for the development of the Bulgarian polar programme. “The creation, maintenance and development of the research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii is a national cause. We are very happy that it enjoys such strong support from our society,” Mednikarov said.
During summer voyages, the crew traditionally seeks opportunities to present the vessel to residents and visitors in cities along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, Mednikarov said. This was RSV 421’s third visit to Nessebar. The city held special significance for the vessel because of its connection to its first commanding officer, Captain Nikolay Danailov, who grew up there.
Mednikarov said RSV 421 had represented Bulgaria abroad, with visits to foreign ports, including in Argentina, helping popularize Bulgarian polar science. Visitors’ interest most often reflected their curiosity about the unfamiliar world of Antarctica and the challenges facing scientists and the crew, he added.
“Our guests usually experience a mild shock. The conversations always revolve around what it is like in Antarctica, how cold it is and what we felt when we first saw the continent,” Mednikarov said.
Acquiring the vessel five years earlier gave Bulgaria new opportunities to develop scientific research in the polar regions, Mednikarov said. “We have a unique platform that has greatly expanded the capabilities of Bulgarian polar science,” he added.
Mednikarov said the vessel’s development resulted from the joint efforts of different teams. “The synergy between scientists, logistics staff and the crew made it possible to build the new research laboratory. The range of scientific projects involving the vessel also expanded considerably,” Mednikarov said.
In 2021, the Nikola Vaptsarov Naval Academy acquired RSV 421 jointly with the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute and Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski. The vessel is intended to transport Bulgarian polar missions to Antarctica, support research under the National Polar Research Programme and serve in the Naval Academy’s fleet.
On December 27, 2022, RSV 421 set sail on its maiden voyage to Antarctica as part of the 31st Bulgarian Antarctic Expedition. BTA opened a National Press Club aboard the vessel in 2022 and another at the Bulgarian Antarctic Base St. Kliment Ohridski on Livingston Island in February 2024.
