A Bulgarian-Greek meeting at the new Rudozem-Xanthi border crossing between the two countries on Friday marked the completion of the project to build the road and its associated infrastructure. The event was organized by the Managing Authority of the Greece-Bulgaria INTERREG Cross-border Cooperation Programme.
It brought together representatives of central and local authorities from both sides of the border to discuss plans to improve the Rudozem-Xanthi road link and opportunities to continue joint initiatives and partnership projects. Participants included Maria Nezeriti, Head of the Managing Authority of the Greece-Bulgaria INTERREG 2021-2027 Programme; Smolyan Regional Governor Georgi Pepelanov; Christodoulos Topsidis, Governor of Greece’s Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace; representatives of Bulgaria’s Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works and Road Infrastructure Agency; and the Greek company Egnatia Odos.
Speakers at the meeting said the Rudozem-Xanthi border crossing is an investment in the development of the cross-border region and offers better prospects for cooperation in business, tourism, culture and trade.
Smolyan Regional Governor Georgi Pepelanov raised the need to draw up a joint plan with specific deadlines to allow buses and trucks to use the Plovdiv-Smolyan-Rudozem-Xanthi route. According to Pepelanov, a joint investment package with clearly identified funding sources and measurable results is needed.
“We are marking an important moment for Bulgaria and Greece and for the prospects of people on both sides of the border. The opening of the road is an important step towards bringing the two regions closer together,” said Christodoulos Topsidis, Governor of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. He said the opening of the border crossing is not merely a transport infrastructure project, but a new stage in cross-border cooperation that turns a historic border into a foundation for partnership and shared opportunities.
