Bulgaria’s ruling party backed President Iliana Iotova on Friday in a controversy over the country’s position on a joint UN statement on Ukraine. MP Anton Kutev of the Progressive Bulgaria parliamentary group said that Iotova stayed out of the meeting in New York at which the statement was presented and did not sign it.
“Not only did President Iliana Iotova not sign the declaration but she also did not attend the Security Council itself,” Kutev told a briefing in the National Assembly in Sofia.
“The Bulgarian side tried to express reservations, but it turned out that the procedural rules did not allow it,” Kutev explained.
This is consistent with the documented positions: Iotova said Bulgaria had not been given an opportunity to express reservations and that she therefore did not attend the meeting, while the Foreign Ministry said Bulgaria endorsed the statement in support of European unity, although the country’s national position is not fully reflected in it.
Kutev observed that the Bulgarian right wing and the Vazrazhdane party share the same view on the matter, which, according to him, is a rare occurrence.
Earlier on Friday, the opposition Democratic Bulgaria party attacked the power-holders over a perceived divergence between the President and the Foreign Ministry on the UN statement on Ukraine.
President Iliana Iotova and Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova have been in New York for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
