Balgarianovinite.com Twelve opera singers from six countries will compete in the third International Young Tenors Competition “The Voice of Kamen” in Ruse from August through August 27, Plamen Beykov, director of the Ruse State Opera, told the Bulgarian News Agency. The event is organized by the Ruse State Opera together with soprano Tanya Ivanova, founder of the Kamen Chanev Foundation.
According to Beykov, the idea for the biennial competition originated with the late tenor Kamen Chanev.
He explained that the competition is open to tenors between the ages of 22 and 40. This year’s edition features 12 opera singers from Germany, China, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, and France.
“The competition will be held over several rounds before an international jury, with all works performed in their original language and accompanied by piano,” Beykov said.
A special round will also be held to determine the Audience Award winner.
The jury is chaired by Argentine tenor, conductor, and composer Josе Cura. Its members include Tanya Ivanova, an internationally acclaimed soprano and founder of the Kamen Chanev Foundation, Plamen Kartaloff, an academician, professor, and longtime director of the National Opera and Ballet in Sofia, Soren Schuhmacher, a German opera director and artistic manager, Daniel Jinga, a tenor and longtime director of the National Opera in Bucharest, Romania, Kaludi Kaludov, a tenor and vocal coach, Oliver Arsovski, director of the National Opera and Ballet of North Macedonia; and Plamen Beykov, an opera singer and director of the Ruse State Opera.
“We have improved the competition’s scoring system, with a diverse range of criteria. The jury will assess qualities such as artistry, intonation and interpretive accuracy in the performances, as well as vocal qualities,” Beykov explained.
The first two rounds of the competition will take place on the stage of the Ruse State Opera on August 21, 22, and 24 and will be closed to the public. During these rounds, the contestants will perform arias from the international opera repertoire, including works from Kamen Chanev’s repertoire.
The gala concert featuring the competition’s winners will take place on August 27 at the Dohodno Zdanie in Ruse, with the Ruse State Opera Orchestra conducted by Jose Cura. The awards ceremony will also take place that evening.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the contestants who finish in the top three places.
Beykov also said that one or more of the tenors could be invited by a member of the jury to perform in a production at the opera house they represent.
The International Young Tenors Competition “The Voice of Kamen” is organized with financial support from the Ministry of Culture and with the assistance of the Municipality of Ruse.
