Balgarianovinite.com The progress of the major overhaul of the Bulgarian section of the Danube Bridge between Ruse and Giurgiu was discussed during a meeting between Ruse Regional Governor Orlin Penkov and Romanian Ambassador to Bulgaria Brandusa Predescu, the Ruse Regional Administration reported here on Monday.
During the meeting, Penkov assured Predescu that the repair works are being carried out on schedule and are expected to be completed in July this year. “It is being considered that during the Easter holidays traffic on the facility could be restored in both directions. The idea is still subject to further discussions, as there is a high probability that the bridge’s repairs would be extended by about a week, but I believe that reopening the bridge for the upcoming holidays is a very good idea,” Penkov noted, adding that for several days all types of vehicles would be able to cross without restrictions.
A number of other topics were also discussed during the meeting, including the development of tourism, business and cultural relations between Bulgaria and Romania. “The partnership between Bulgaria and Romania is at a strategic level, and the Ruse region plays the role of an important centre for economic and transport links between the two countries,” Penkov said, highlighting the role of several initiatives aimed at promoting cooperation between institutions, businesses and cultural organisations on both sides of the Danube River.
The Romanian Ambassador emphasized the significant role of Lily Gancheva, Executive Director of the Danubius Euroregion Association, noting that she is a person who contributes greatly to the development of cross-border relations. Penkov also supported this statement and expressed his appreciation for Gancheva.
Penkov stressed that Romania is among Bulgaria’s main trading partners. According to data from the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB), the total foreign direct investment from Romania in Bulgaria amounted to EUR 398.7 million by the end of the first half of 2025. At the same time, there has been a continuous increase in trade between the two countries, which in 2024 exceeded EUR 7.3 billion.
The meeting also discussed opportunities for implementing joint projects under European programmes, which could contribute to the sustainable development of the region and strengthen ties between local communities. Both sides expressed confidence that active dialogue and strong partnership will continue to create new opportunities for development and cooperation in the interest of the citizens of both countries.
