Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed took some time this week to share some spicy popcorn and Gatorade with TMZ DC reporters while also defending his religious beliefs from critics.
TMZ DC’s Jacob Wasserman posted a video to X on Thursday showing him sharing some spicy snacks with El-Sayed outside a gas station in Detroit. El-Sayed is running against Republican Mike Rogers.
“I hate what I’m about to do right now,” Wasserman told El-Sayed as the candidate popped open a bag of popcorn and was informed Wasserman was gluten free.
El-Sayed said, “there’s no there’s there’s really no reason this should have gluten in this,” as he read the ingredients.
Wasserman ended up partaking and joked it was similar to the show Hot Ones where celebrities are invited to do an interview while chowing down on spicy wings.
Wasserman struggled with the heat of the chips as he tried to pivot into a serious interview.
“It’s not actually that hot, bro,” El-Sayed said.
“I don’t do heat,” Wasserman said.
“Clearly,” El-Sayed responded as he had a Gatorade pulled from his vehicle so the reporter could cool down.
El Sayed declared, “Get this man a Gatorade Zero. It’s an emergency!” before answering a serious question from a rally-goer.
Wasserman asked:
So now we’re getting to — here’s the interview time — so we’ve been here now for a few hours. We went to Kalamazoo, and we pulled one person, first person we met, I said Syed or Rogers. They said, the thing about Sayed is I don’t think he’s gonna be as progressive as he says he’s going to be. I said, what do you mean? They said well, due to his religious beliefs, I don’t think he’s gong to be as progressive as he says. What do you think about that?
El-Sayed, who is Muslim, argued he believes in “rights” for anyone and blasted Republicans like Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX).
He said:
It is because of my religious beliefs that I need in America where we believe in and protect the Constitution at all costs. I don’t want the federal government and certainly not the crazies like Ted Cruz using the federal government to tell us what we can do with our lives. You live your way, I live my way, he lives his way, right? That’s the beauty of this country. So I believe in rights. Rights are rights are rights and I want everybody to be able to live their best life.
He added, “I choose to put my face on the ground 34 times a day. That’s a choice that I make, and I love the right to make, which means that why would I ever allow this government to take that right away from me, just like I would never allow the government to take away the right for somebody to love who they love, to be who they are, you know, to make choices and live their life as they are.”
