Serbians to Rally in Belgrade against Their Government on Saturday Night 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Participants in the upcoming anti-government protest in Serbia – the first of the year, set to begin on Saturday at 7 p.m. Bulgarian time – are heading toward Slavija Square in downtown Belgrade. Posts on the Instagram account studenti_u_blokadi indicate first-aid locations, as protest organizers fear possible provocations and acts of violence.
Earlier Saturday, it was reported that rail transport in the country had been temporarily suspended. It was later clarified that the reason was an anonymous tip about explosive devices placed on trains and in railway depots.
The student protests are part of a larger movement that emerged after the collapse of a canopy at the train station in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad in November 2024, which killed 16 people and left one seriously injured. Serbian students have led the protesters, who are calling on the country’s president, Aleksandar Vucic, to resign over the tragedy and accusing the government of negligence and corruption.
The government responded to the protests with brutal repression against demonstrators and arbitrary arrests of organizers and supporters, dpa reported.
The main slogan of Saturday’s protest is “Students are winning”. One protester, a 34-year-old man who arrived in Belgrade from the city of Zrenjanin, shared with BTA: “We don’t want much. Just let elections be scheduled. We cannot keep living in this country, ruled by people without morals and without a clear and honest vision for the future.”
Since this morning, there has been a heavy police presence in Belgrade, including in Pioneers Park, where people gathered to show support for Vucic.
A pro-Vucic rally was also held in the town of Kumanovo, North Macedonia, on Saturday. According to Lokalno.mk, hundreds marched in support of the Serbian President.
