The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has detected a secondary outbreak of sheep and goat pox at a livestock farm in the village of Tatarevo, Mineralni Bani Municipality, Haskovo Region. The farm has 15 sheep and 19 goats, the agency said. The owner reported the case after clinical signs of the disease appeared and fully cooperated with veterinary authorities.
Sheep and goat pox poses no risk to humans, but its spread causes significant economic losses, the BFSA said.
A 5-km protection zone has been established around the outbreak, covering the villages of Tatarevo, Mineralni Bani and Susam in Mineralni Bani Municipality and Garvanovo in Haskovo Municipality.
The 20-km surveillance zone covers settlements in seven municipalities across Haskovo, Stara Zagora, Kardzhali and Plovdiv regions.
The movement of sheep and goats is prohibited in both zones, except for animals intended for immediate slaughter under specified conditions. Animals must be kept indoors.
Livestock farms will be inspected to count the animals and update records in the VetIS Integrated Information System. Official veterinary controls will also be carried out. An epizootic investigation is under way to trace the movement of animals, products, feed and vehicles associated with the outbreak.
Special requirements under the applicable legislation govern the transport and processing of raw milk from the affected areas. Measures have been taken to control and eradicate the disease, and owners are entitled to compensation under the Veterinary Activity Act. The Haskovo Regional Food Safety Directorate is coordinating the implementation of the measures with local authorities.
