Balgarianovinite.com A discussion under the “Foster Me” national initiative was held Monday at the National Press Club of the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) in Shumen, Northeastern Bulgaria. Organized jointly by BTA and the Social Assistance Agency (SAA), the initiative promotes foster care and raises awareness of its importance. Representatives of national and local authorities, social institutions, Shumen University, foster parents, and social workers discussed challenges and opportunities for foster care development in Bulgaria.
Shumen Deputy Mayor Dr. Svetoslava Hainova emphasized that the municipal administration in Shumen embraced the idea of foster care many years ago. She noted that Shumen was one of the ten pilot municipalities when the process of deinstitutionalizing children and moving them out of residential care homes began at the national level. The regional foster care team started operating as early as 2009, Hainova noted, adding that Shumen Municipality ranked first in achievements among professional foster families.
Foster care is a serious challenge whose success depends on coordination among numerous institutions working for the well-being of children, said Martina Dragneva, Director of the Regional Directorate for Social Assistance in Shumen. She noted that there are currently 100 foster families operating across Shumen Region, adding that three municipalities have not yet joined the project. Currently, 80 children are placed with 84 foster families in Shumen Region, head of the Regional Foster Care Team head Nermin Beyti pointed out.
The national joint initiative of BTA and SAA, “Foster Me”, was launched at the National Press Club of BTA in Sofia. A discussion was held at the end of April in Svishtov. The initiative will include 33 meetings in all BTA press clubs across the country.
“Foster Me” is part of the project “Strengthening the capacity of Social Assistance Agency staff in relation to the modernization of social protection systems” – Component 1, aimed at the development of foster care in Bulgaria and strengthening the capacity of those involved in it: social workers, municipal employees, foster parents and others. The project is funded under the Human Resources Development Programme, co-financed by the European Social Fund Plus.
