Sofia Exhibition to Explore Happiness as a Form of Resistance

An exhibition exploring whether people can be happy in difficult times without losing touch with the world opens at Sofia’s Vaska Emanuilova Gallery, the gallery said on Wednesday.
Curator Galina Dimitrova’s project is inspired by Simone de Beauvoir’s reflections on the possibility of happiness in “a broken world”. She revisits the question in today’s context, seeing parallels with the period after the Second World War. Her curatorial concept presents happiness as a possible act of resistance to injustice and absurdity.
The exhibition brings together works by 11 Bulgarian artists: Veneta Androva, Harita Asumani, Iva Vacheva, Nevena Georgieva, Petra Dimitrova, Dumisani Karamanski, Antoaneta Quick, Slav Nedev, Radostin Sedevchev, Dimitar Solakov and Dina Stoev. Some pieces explore personal stories and existential questions, while others address experiences of trauma, art and freedom, the organizers said.
The selection includes Androva’s Stretch & Release, Asumani’s Burning Flower, Vacheva’s Chew Slander into Kisses and Stoev’s The Louvre Is Empty. The works explore discrimination and ways of coping with it, intimacy, individual freedom and the possibility of happiness in difficult circumstances, the organizers said.
