Sofia’s Green Ring could change not just one particular location, but the way people move around the city, meet one another and experience their neighbourhoods, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev said in a Facebook post.
Of all the projects being developed for Sofia, the Green Ring was the most special to him because of its potential to transform how people move around the city, meet and experience their neighbourhoods, Terziev said.
The Green Ring had been discussed for years, but for the first time the project was now being discussed in the present tense, he said. Funding for the design work was already available, work was under way on the necessary sites and procedures, and parts of the future route were beginning to open to the public even before construction had started.
According to Terziev, the project’s purpose was to connect Sofia’s neighbourhoods more effectively, making walking and cycling convenient while ensuring that people had places to play, relax and meet close to their homes.
He said lessons learned on the ground would be incorporated into the technical design brief for the first section. The necessary land had been acquired and preparations were under way for the section between Pioner Railway Station and Shipchenski Prohod Boulevard, he added.
Sofia’s budget already includes EUR 155,000 for technical designs for sections in the Iztok and Slatina neighbourhoods. Terziev said the city had taken an important step towards the project by beginning to use the area and plan for its future.
The mayor noted that the section in Iztok had attracted hundreds of people for the “Along the Ring: Iztok” festival, who walked around and enjoyed the area. The festival, Sofia Municipality said, is the first stop of a travelling event that will continue to another section in the spring.
The “Green Ring Sofia” is a strategic project of Sofia Municipality aimed at transforming 30 km of unused land into a linear park connecting 30 Sofia neighbourhoods and creating new cycling and pedestrian paths, as well as spaces for recreation, sports and cultural activities.
Terziev said during a presentation of the project in June that the Green Ring would demonstrate Sofia’s true potential.
Earlier this year, the mayor said Sofia Municipality aimed to begin construction of the project’s first section, between Pioner Railway Station and Shipchenski Prohod Boulevard, by the end of 2026.
