Sofia to Host Nuclear Conference on New Reactors and Project Financing

The fifth International Nuclear Conference will take place in Sofia, its organizer, the Bulgarian Energy and Mining Forum (BEMF), said on Wednesday.
Scheduled for October 1 and 2, the conference will focus on new nuclear units at the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant, AP1000 technology, small modular reactors (SMRs) and financing new nuclear construction.
The conference will bring together representatives of Bulgarian and European institutions, international organizations, regulators, the financial sector and leading nuclear industry companies. The programme includes presentations by Excel (US), Westinghouse, Framatome/EDF, Siemens, the European Commission, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the World Bank, the European Investment Bank, Bulgaria’s Nuclear Regulatory Agency, Bulgarian Energy Holding (BEH), Kozloduy NPP-New Builds, Marsh, CMS and other major companies.
The event will take place under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy, with the theme Nuclear Energy: From Ambitions to Implementation.
Discussions and presentations will include updates from representatives of leading global companies, experts and diplomats on the role and development of the nuclear industry; the status, specific features and progress of the AP1000 project for Units 7 and 8 at Kozloduy; and the latest advances in SMR technologies and projects under development. European and global financial institutions and consultancies will offer expert assessments of nuclear energy and the financing and insurance of nuclear projects. Other sessions will examine licensing AP1000 technology in the European market and nuclear energy innovations, including links with data centres and the roles of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
The conference will also examine opportunities for Bulgarian businesses to join supply chains for new nuclear construction. Particular attention will be paid to SMRs and their potential use in Bulgaria for generating electricity and heat, producing hydrogen and meeting industrial needs.
The two-day event will conclude with an international discussion on accelerating new nuclear projects in Europe, in line with its central aim of moving the nuclear energy debate from intentions to concrete projects.
