Balgarianovinite.com The organizers of the BAUHAUS Down Syndrome World Championships Bulgaria 2026 have invited Sofia residents and visitors to join the opening celebrations of the global sporting event for athletes with Down syndrome on Saturday evening.
The opening-day programme includes the gathering of national teams at St. Nedelya Square at 7:00 p.m., followed by a ceremonial parade to the National Palace of Culture (NDK) between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The official opening ceremony and a concert programme will begin at 8:00 p.m. in front of the NDK.
“The organizers invite the residents and guests of Sofia to join the celebration and support the participants in this significant international sporting event dedicated to sport, inclusion and equal opportunities. We look forward to welcoming you on June 14 at 8:00 p.m. in front of the NDK to launch the BAUHAUS Down Syndrome World Championships Bulgaria 2026 together,” the Federation for Adapted Physical Activity said in a Facebook post.
President Iliana Iotova, patron of the championships, is expected to address the participants and guests during the ceremony. Other officials attending include Youth and Sports Minister Encho Keryazov, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, Supreme Administrative Court President Lyubomir Gaydov, and Federation for Adapted Physical Activity Bulgaria President Slav Petkov.
More than 400 athletes from 27 countries are participating in the championships, which are being held for the first time in Bulgaria and Eastern Europe. Bulgaria will be represented by 20 athletes competing in athletics, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, tennis and table tennis.
Following the official opening, competitions will take place from June 15 to 17.
