Sofia Zoo has been granted full membership in the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), Sofia Municipality said in a press release on Wednesday. The decision was made during the organization’s Annual Conference in Paris from September 29 to October 3, 2026.
The zoo will now have the right to vote in the Annual General Meeting in the formation of European policies for the breeding of protected species. Membership also provides the opportunity to participate in over 400 international programs for the conservation and reproduction of endangered species, direct access to the international scientific database and know-how, as well as constant expert support from the EAZA headquarters in Amsterdam. Sofia Zoo’s membership in EAZA provides the opportunity to develop and enrich its collection, the municipality said in its statement.
The zoo first applied in 2006, and in 2023 it received the status of a temporary member of the organization. “We knew that we had a very difficult road ahead of us, because it takes most zoos at least 5 years to meet all the criteria. Thanks to the round-the-clock work of our team and with the support of the Sofia Municipality, we managed to achieve it in just 3 years,” said the zoo’s director, Dobromir Borislavov. “Today, the Sofia Zoo is the only one in the country with full membership and voting rights, which puts us side by side with the 310 most developed zoos in Europe and the world,” he added.
The Sofia Zoo is the largest on the Balkan Peninsula with over 235 acres of territory. It develops educational and conservation programs, working with species valuable to the region and Europe, the municipality recalled. It is home to over 1,300 specimens, including Asian elephants, the white rhinoceros Chico, the sloth bear Shreya from Singapore, as well as rescued animals such as confiscated flamingos and the famous crocodile from Sofia’s Botunets neighbourhood. In 2028, the Sofia Zoo will celebrate its 140th anniversary.
