Balgarianovinite.com The audience will hear a programme that resonates with them, Spanish guitarist Miguel Trapaga Sanchez told BTA ahead of his performance alongside the Frosch String Quartet here on Saturday. The concert will feature works by Luigi Boccherini, Isaac Albeniz, and Astor Piazzolla.
The concert is part of the 65th edition of the March Music Days international festival, organized by the Municipality of Ruse with the support of the Ministry of Culture. BTA is a media partner of the festival.
“The participants in this festival are always of the highest international caliber. That is why it is a great honour for me to be here this year,” said the Spanish guitarist, who has won numerous national and international awards, performs worldwide, and teaches at the Madrid Royal Conservatory.
Festival director Iva Chavdarova noted at a news conference before the concert that the Frosch String Quartet is among the ensembles that have presented many premieres of Bulgarian music over the years.
Frosch Quartet member Negina Stoyanova said that they have a long-standing relationship with Chavdarova and have always been given freedom in choosing their programmes. “We have often presented bolder ideas – including works by contemporary Bulgarian composers or music that has never been heard in Bulgaria,” the violinist noted.
Miguel Trapaga Sanchez told BTA that the Spanish and Bulgarian audiences are actually very similar in temperament and energy. “I have played before for a Bulgarian audience, in September in Varna, again with the Frosch Quartet, and I was received very warmly. And the girls in the quartet are top-notch musicians; they have a great feel for the music and convey it beautifully. I feel as though we have been playing together for a long time,” he noted.
The Frosch musicians also emphasized that communication between them was almost wordless. Together with the Spanish guitarist, they expressed hope that the programme they had prepared for the concert in Ruse would also be very well received.
They noted that they had strived to build a bridge between the Baroque era and the contemporary composer Piazzolla, following the southern Spanish temperament. They pointed out that Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires will be performed in a version for string quartet and guitar, without a solo instrument. According to the musicians, the piece can be perceived not so much as a depiction of nature, but as a reflection of the rhythm and dynamics of life.
“We tried to put together a programme with a southern sound. The idea was to connect Piazzolla’s music with the shared roots of Spanish music, and how the solo guitar serves as a unique bridge between these composers and the traditions they carry,” Miguel Trapaga Sanchez further noted to BTA.
He noted that contemporary guitar music also has a very strong influence from Spanish music at its roots. “When composers from other countries write for the guitar today, they often envision Spain and associate it with the Spanish tradition,” the guitarist added.
Miguel Trapaga Sanchez also commented on the impact of artificial intelligence today, noting that true music happens on stage, in the moment of performance. It is very different from what artificial intelligence can generate, which is why it cannot be completely replaced by it.
