Balgarianovinite.com Sport should be a key State priority regardless of who is in power, caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev said on Tuesday at a meeting in the Council of Ministers. Iliev presented a structured analytical report based on a survey conducted among licensed sports federations in the first week of March, summarizing their responses, proposals, ideas and solutions.
The meeting was attended by caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov, his adviser on youth and sport, Dimitar Berbatov, and representatives of sports federations.
Iliev argued that sport builds strong character and resilience, producing people who are disciplined, hardworking and capable of achieving results. “It also contributes to both mental and physical health and brings only positive effects in these difficult times,” the Minister added.
He said that children face many challenges, including various addictions, and said sport can serve as a form of prevention.
Iliev thanked the sports federations for their daily work in supporting sport and encouraging children to participate, as well as the sports clubs that continue to operate without interruption.
At the meeting, caretaker Prime Minister Gurov said that athletes are the heroes of modern times, just as generals once were, and that today success is achieved on the sports field. He noted that about eight weeks ago he took on what initially seemed an impossible task – ensuring fair elections so that people feel their vote matters. According to Gurov, this has been a difficult task, especially for a government without the usual instruments of power – no parliamentary or media support and no backing from the judiciary, which has made the job even harder. “As a typical team, a bit like volunteers, we naively and romantically believed we could do something, and now, eight weeks later, we are on the eve of the next elections,” he said.
Gurov said that the Government wants to do everything possible to make sport a strong pillar of Bulgarian society. He said sport has given him a lot, shaped him as a person, and most importantly taught him never to give up. “Sport gives people opportunities, provides direction, and brings them together,” he added.
Gurov expressed hope that sports federations will recognize the work done so far and the cause behind it, and maintain the same direction of development with those who come into power next.
