Stambolovo Municipality is among the 20 winners of the EU initiative New European Bauhaus: Boost for Small Municipalities. The project The Green Heart: Stambolovo’s Artery will receive EUR 30,000 in funding from the European Commission to landscape the refurbished sidewalks along the village’s main street with local, drought-resistant plant species, the municipality’s mayor, Adnan Yildiz, told the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) on Thursday.
“Using municipal funds from the current budget, we have refurbished the sidewalks along the main street and identified the green areas in the central part that require renewal of vegetation,” Yildiz said. He is on a two-day visit to Brussels together representatives of the municipal administration, during which they are also learning about other European initiatives to support local development.
Around 800 projects from across Europe took part in the New European Bauhaus competition; 30 reached the final stage, and 20 were approved for funding, Yildiz announced.
According to him, the project that secured funding has two main objectives – to address the challenges of climate change and to preserve the plant species characteristic of the area. The plan is to plant native drought-tolerant shrubs and flowers. The project was developed by a team of specialists within the municipal administration, which shows that even small local authorities have the necessary human resources to prepare high-quality initiatives, the mayor emphasized.
The social aspect of the project centres on the involvement of local residents in the landscaping and the subsequent upkeep of the space. According to Yildiz, the municipality’s experience with the Citizens’ Budgets programme, which the HALO Foundation is implementing for the first time this year, shows that people are interested in initiatives in which they are directly involved. The idea is for the space to be renovated in collaboration with residents, so that they see it as their own and take care of it.
The municipal team’s visit to Brussels is also linked to other opportunities for European funding. Representatives of the municipality are taking part in the Startup Village initiative, which aims to promote entrepreneurship in rural areas. The municipality is awaiting the launch of calls for proposals so that it can apply for support for local business initiatives.
Another topic is Stambolovo’s participation in the MIP4Adapt initiative, which assists local and regional authorities in adapting to climate change. According to Yildiz, the municipality has received technical assistance in two areas – to continue work on the water supply infrastructure and to utilize photovoltaic energy for street lighting.
Over the past few years, more than EUR 10 million has been invested in the municipality’s water supply infrastructure, but there are still ageing water pipes that need to be replaced to reduce water wastage. Street lighting has already been upgraded with energy-saving lights, and the next step is the construction of photovoltaic power stations to supply it, the mayor said.
