Balgarianovinite.com Even before St Anastasia Island welcomed its first visitors on Sunday, music was already echoing among its old buildings. In various locations across this island off the Bulgarian coastal city of Burgas, pop singer and songwriter Stefan Valdobrev and his band, The Usual Suspects, were working on their “Acoustics of Bulgaria” project, recording the song “Anchor and Kite” and filming footage for the documentary accompanying the project. In the early hours of the day, the musicians worked in the church, around the lighthouse and in the building that now houses the museum.
“I am glad that we are starting work on the project again from St Anastasia Island. I really wanted to include something connected with Burgas because Burgas is a very, very dear city to me,” Valdobrev told BTA. He added that 12-13 songs had been recorded at different locations around the country last year, after which work was temporarily suspended to allow the material to be reviewed and mixed and new songs to be prepared.
According to Valdobrev, the island has a special energy that is an important part of the concept behind “Acoustics of Bulgaria”. “What I announced for this project is actually not just the acoustics themselves, but also the energy of the place,” the musician explained.
The song “Anchor and Kite” received its final lyrics immediately before the recording. Valdobrev said he had made the final changes early that morning. “The place probably helped me do it. I usually spend much longer writing my lyrics. This morning I managed it in less than two hours,” he said.
According to Valdobrev, working in such locations also presents its own challenges. Unlike in a studio, where a musician can be alone with their music, outdoor recordings involve a team and other people around them, giving the performance something of a concert feel.
“I am a slightly introverted person when I work, when I create and when I record. Here, however, you are surrounded by lots of people and there is something of a concert feel to the performance,” Valdobrev said. He said this is a feeling he is still getting used to, but it helps him present new songs to audiences while they are still being created.
The recording of “Anchor and Kite” features musicians from The Usual Suspects – Ivan Lechev, Stoyan Yankoulov-Stundzhi, Miroslav Ivanov and Veselin “Eko” Veselinov.
“Acoustics of Bulgaria” is a project by Stefan Valdobrev and The Usual Suspects, inspired by the musician’s travels around the country and by the connection between music, history and space. The idea is to record songs at iconic locations across Bulgaria, with the natural acoustics and atmosphere of each place becoming part of the project’s sound. The project also includes the production of a documentary film.
