Balgarianovinite.com A stronger Bulgaria contributes to a stronger Europe, and a stronger Europe contributes to a stronger NATO alliance, said NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Alexus Grynkewich during a briefing on Wednesday at the Ministry of Defence, where he met with Chief of Defence Admiral Emil Eftimov.
Grynkewich said that the discussion with Eftimov was fruitful, and expressed confidence talks with Bulgaria’s Prime Minister, Defence Minister and the President, scheduled on Thursday, would also be productive. Prior to the meetings, the General and Eftimov will visit the Monument to the Unknown Soldier, where they will lay a wreath in honour of the Bulgarians who gave their lives in the wars for their homeland.
Grynkewich said that NATO’s collective security does not come for free, and Bulgaria is well aware of this – that is why the country is investing in defence and fulfilling the commitments it made in The Hague in 2025. Bulgaria has already exceeded the 2% of GDP requirement for defence spending and is on a stable path to reach 5% by 2035, Grynkewich said.
He commended Bulgaria for having clear plans on transforming financial resources into actual capabilities. The General pointed out that Bulgaria had received the first tranche of eight F-16 aircrafts the previous year and is expecting 183 Strykers that the country had ordered, which was strengthening the entire Alliance’s defence capabilities. He also highlighted the role of the human factor in defence and said he had always been extremely proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with Bulgarian service members.
