Balgarianovinite.com Strumyani Municipality called for volunteers to help with recovery and cleanup operations following flooding caused by torrential rains, the municipal administration said on Saturday. Those willing to help can register every day from 7:30 a.m. outside the municipal building, from where they will be assigned tasks.
A state of emergency has been declared in the municipal centre of Strumyani and the village of Ilindentsi due to the worsening situation following a severe storm and torrential rain late on August 24. The heavy rainfall caused a major surge in the Shashka and Zlinskа rivers. The state of emergency is in effect until 1:00 a.m. on August 31.
The Municipality also appealed for donations of bottled mineral water in 0.5-litre bottles for volunteers and teams working on the ground. The water can be delivered to the municipal administration building. Volunteers taking part in the recovery work should be equipped with boots, sturdy clothing, masks, gloves and shovels.
Earlier in the day, the Bulgarian Land Forces said on their official Facebook page that 20 military personnel are working on site in the flood-affected area.
The Blagoevgrad Regional Health Inspectorate said it carried out inspections on August 29 in the flood-affected settlements of Ilindentsi, Strumyani, Mikrevo and Drakata.
Water supply through the network operated by Water Supply and Sewerage-Blagoevgrad has been restored in all four settlements, but the water is still unfit for drinking and household use. Bottled water has been provided for residents, while a water tanker carrying drinking water has also been deployed in Strumyani.
According to the health inspectorate, samples taken on August 26 from the three water tankers in Strumyani Municipality and from the tanker filling point in Blagoevgrad met drinking-water quality requirements.
The inspectorate said tap water in Strumyani, Ilindentsi, Mikrevo and Drakata will be declared fit for drinking and household use after two consecutive sets of test results meet the statutory requirements.
The situation is similar in the village of Ploski, Sandanski Municipality. According to the Blagoevgrad Regional Health Inspectorate, water supply through the network operated by UVEX has been restored, but the water remains unfit for drinking and household use until two consecutive test results meet the requirements. Bottled water has been provided to residents.
Prime Minister Rumen Radev visited the area on Friday to inspect the damage caused by the disaster. Environment and Water Minister Rositsa Karamfilova, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov, Agriculture and Forestry Minister Plamen Abrovski, Deputy Labour and Social Policy Minister Daniel Rusev, MPs and representatives of various institutions also visited Strumyani.
