Tick-Borne Crimean-Congo Fever Claims Lives in Turkiye as Cases Rise 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Warmer weather and rainfall in Turkiye have led to an increase in tick bites, which have caused fatalities in various parts of the country. The disease Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF), transmitted by ticks, has so far claimed several lives, with the most affected provinces including Tokat, Sivas and Erzincan, local media reported.
The latest case involves a 55-year-old man, father of four, from the village of Adamlakoy in the Hafik district, Sivas Province. He became the third victim in this northeastern Turkish province after he died in hospital, where he had been admitted with a high fever, having been bitten by a tick six days earlier, the news website Haberturk said.
There were earlier fatalities from CCHF in the provinces of Tokat and Kastamonu, Turkish publications wrote.
Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever is an acute infectious disease caused by a virus transmitted by ticks and through contact with infected blood and tissues. Mortality among humans can reach a high rate, according to the World Health Organization. With more time spent outdoors and among grassy areas during spring and summer, cases of the disease begin to rise.
Turkiye is developing a vaccine against CCHF that is already prepared but is undergoing testing.
Health authorities in the country have been compiling statistics on the disease since 2003, when the first registered case occurred in the northeastern Tokat Province, according to information on the website of the Turkish Health Ministry. Frequent cases are observed in Central and Eastern Turkiye and in the Black Sea region.
Fatalities in the country account for 4–5% of all cases. The highest number of CCHF cases was recorded in 2009, when they reached 1,318. Although they fell to 343 in 2017, the disease continues to be monitored closely in Turkiye.
