Balgarianovinite.com The leader of the election-winning Tisza party, Peter Magyar, presented his vision and the first steps of his government at a press conference on Monday afternoon, Hungarian media reported.
According to near-final results announced on Monday morning, Tisza won Hungary’s parliamentary elections on Sunday with a decisive lead over Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his Fidesz party.
Magyar promised that every person will have the opportunity to express their opinion. He addressed the topics of Hungary’s new foreign policy, conclusions from the election campaign, the first steps of his government, and the prospects for an even greater victory for Tisza than the election result which had been reported. He also said he wanted the constitution to be amended to prevent Viktor Orban from returning to the post of prime minister.
According to Magyar, his party could ultimately secure 141 or 142 seats in the 199-member National Assembly once votes from registered voters who did not vote at their place of residence, as well as votes from abroad, are counted. According to current results, Tisza has won 138 seats. He said that Fidesz, Orban’s party, managed to win enough votes for 55 MPs only by exploiting its control over the media and intelligence services.
Magyar called on the President of Hungary, Tamas Sulyok, to convene the inaugural session of the new parliament by May 4 or 5, “or even earlier if the election results are confirmed sooner”. He again insisted that the president should resign immediately after granting him a mandate to form a government.
The Tisza leader also outlined the three most urgent policy packages of his future government. These are: constitutional reform introducing a two-term limit for prime ministers, which would effectively disqualify Orban from returning to office; the restoration of pluralistic democracy and a system of checks and balances; the creation of an asset recovery office; Hungary’s accession to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office and its return to the International Criminal Court.
Magyar insisted that politics should be for the people. He said foreign politicians had asked him about the secret of his popularity, and he believes it lies simply in spending as much time as possible among people, even if it requires sacrifices. He promised maximum public participation in politics – through referendums or online polls – and said politics can be noble, honest and fair.
According to Magyar, Hungarians made a clear choice on Sunday that their place is in the European Union and in NATO. He said the EU is an extremely successful peace project, and as a former diplomat he understands how it works, as well as its bureaucratic shortcomings.
He promised to defend Hungarian interests uncompromisingly in Strasbourg, Brussels, Washington, Moscow and Beijing.
“The new government will be a constructive partner in Europe, resolving disputes through compromise,” Magyar said. He argued that Europe has lost ground amid social problems and the burden of the war in Ukraine.
Magyar promised to end the practice of blocking candidate countries’ accession for domestic political reasons, but added that he considers Ukraine’s EU membership acceptable only after it fulfils all conditions and after a referendum is held. He noted that the EUR 90 billion loan package for Kyiv had been agreed long ago and that he has no intention of blocking it, although Hungary will not take part in repaying the funds.
Magyar also revealed that he had received information that Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto and his close associates are destroying documents related to sanctions at the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, and that similar activity is taking place in other state bodies.
The next 30 days will be critical, he warned, as a large number of agreements, contracts and international commitments remain unknown. Those that do not harm Hungarian interests will be published, he added.
He also said he plans to reform the government by abolishing ministries with overly broad powers. As an example, he said separate ministries for education and finance would be created.
In his victory speech on Sunday, Magyar had already singled out certain current state officials whom he wants to resign. After first calling for President Sulyok’s resignation, he also urged “every puppet installed by the Orban government over the past 16 years” to do the same. He called on the Prosecutor General and the heads of the Supreme Court, the National Judicial Office, the Constitutional Court, the State Audit Office, the Hungarian Competition Authority and the media regulator to resign.
“They should leave instead of waiting to be removed – because they will be; because this system that held our country and our independent institutions hostage is over,” Magyar said on Sunday night.
On Monday, however, Magyar said that Hungary’s state administration has excellent professionals who have so far been suppressed for political reasons. He said they will now be able to fully use their expertise and work freely.
He also stated that Mihaly Varga could remain head of the central bank, as long as he sticks to his mandate.
