Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria must stand firmly behind the Bulgarian community in Ukraine, parliamentary Tourism Committee Chair Rositsa Kirova said on Monday.
“It is our duty, as the Bulgarian State, to stand firmly behind the Bulgarian community in Ukraine and people who identify as Bulgarian, so that they feel Bulgaria’s support and so that Ukraine’s regional and central authorities understand that our people have not been abandoned,” Kirova said during a meeting with Bessarabske Municipality Head Sava Chernev in Ukraine’s Bolhrad District.
“Every strong country stands behind its ethnic communities abroad,” she added.
Kirova visited Odesa Region as part of a Bulgarian delegation attending celebrations marking the 205th anniversary of Bolhrad. The delegation also included Bulgaria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Ukraine Zlatin Krastev and Bulgarian Consul General in Odesa Svetoslav Ivanov. BTA Director General Kiril Valchev took part in the meetings as a member of the delegation.
“Most residents of Bessarabske Municipality are Bulgarian. When we provide assistance, however, we must ensure that the other nationalities living alongside Bulgarians here also feel its benefits. The Bulgarian State stands behind the Bulgarian minority while respecting the rights of all other nationalities,” Kirova said.
Bulgaria and Ukraine must develop their economic ties, build bridges, restore shipping routes and ferry services, and pursue everything that would support the development of both the region and its links with Bulgaria, Ambassador Krastev said.
“This meeting is another important step in developing and strengthening cooperation between our municipality and Bulgaria,” Chernev said, welcoming the official guests.
Participants discussed current issues concerning support for Ukraine, continued cooperation and prospects for joint work, as well as ways to support Bessarabske Municipality and its residents, more than half of whom are Bulgarian.
Chernev thanked the Bulgarian representatives for their support, concern, assistance and readiness to continue helping Ukraine and the Bulgarian community.
“We are convinced that meetings of this kind open new opportunities for partnership, joint projects and the further development of our municipality,” Chernev said.
Kirova presented Chernev with a commemorative plaque depicting the Panagyurishte Gold Treasure in recognition of his contribution to strengthening friendly ties between the Ukrainian and Bulgarian peoples.
Bessarabske Municipality in Bolhrad District was established in 2020 as a result of administrative-territorial reform. It includes five large Bulgarian villages: Rivne, Vynohradivka, Yarove, Vilne and Petrivsk. Its population stood at 21,373 in 2023, more than 50% of whom were Bulgarian.
In 2025, Bessarabske Municipality signed a cooperation memorandum with Tundzha Municipality in Yambol Region.
More than 150,000 Bulgarians live in Odesa Region, making them its third-largest ethnic community according to Ukraine’s latest official census. Around 50,000 to 60,000 Bulgarians live in the city of Odesa, while the largest compact Bulgarian communities are concentrated in Bolhrad, Izmail and Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi districts.
