Balgarianovinite.com In a BTA interview, Plamena Ivanova, owner of the Plamena Palace hotel in the seaside resort of Primorsko, said that she is observing a clear shift in tourist preferences, with a more conscious approach to holidays. Visitors are no longer simply looking for a place to stay, they seek an opportunity to recharge in an environment that offers peace and tranquillity.
According to her, the growing interest in personalized wellness services, along with the synergy between climate therapy and modern hospitality, is becoming a key driver of sustainable tourism development along Bulgaria’s southern Black Sea coast. The transformation of the traditional seaside holiday into a holistic experience focused on both physical and mental well-being lies at the heart of new concepts aimed at extending Bulgaria’s summer tourist season.
Wellness Through Lens of Nature
A central focus of the hotel’s new strategy, Ivanova explained, is the use of the region’s natural resources, specifically, the combination of the coastal climate and the clean air from the Strandzha Mountains. This unique microclimate, she said, is highly beneficial for physical regeneration.
The wellness concept at Plamena Palace includes a saltwater bio-pool that avoids the use of harsh chemicals and chlorine.
“Our goal is to create a balance between movement and relaxation through activities such as yoga, tennis, and various recreational options,” she said. Many guests, she added, discover new activities during their stay, habits they later integrate into a healthier lifestyle back home.
From Garden to Table: Clean Food as Foundation
Another key element of a healthy stay is food quality. The hotel follows a self-sustained production model, maintaining its own fruit and vegetable gardens across several locations in the country for more than 15 years.
“We place strong emphasis on the fundamental importance of clean food. We offer produce from our own gardens, fresh Black Sea fish, and dairy products sourced from small local farms,” Ivanova explained.
She highlighted that this is particularly important for families with children, who are among the hotel’s most loyal guests. Although the hotel does not operate on an all-inclusive basis, most visitors still prefer dining at the on-site restaurant due to the guaranteed origin and quality of the ingredients.
Adapting to Change
Transitioning to a wellness-oriented model requires courage and a long-term vision, Ivanova believes.
“Every change carries the risk of losing a certain type of guest, but we follow the preferences of our loyal clients, who increasingly value peace and quiet over noise,” she said.
In her view, the future of the region lies in investments that enable meaningful rest beyond the peak summer months. The mild climate at the beginning and end of the season provides excellent conditions for health tourism, making it a key mechanism for overcoming seasonality in the sector.
Regarding staffing, Ivanova noted that the industry continues to face challenges. However, the hotel relies primarily on Bulgarian employees, many of whom return seasonally, along with a small number of international staff.
