Trade Union Opposes Proposed EUR 660 Minimum Wage, Plans Protest Motorcade in Sofia on Friday

The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) opposes the government’s proposal to set the minimum monthly wage for 2027 at EUR 660. The amount is stipulated in a draft decree published for public consultation, CITUB President Plamen Dimitrov told reporters on Thursday. He said the proposal was costing the government public support.
Dimitrov said that during earlier talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Galab Donev, CITUB had made clear that the minimum wage for next year should be EUR 690, as envisaged under the previous mechanism in the Labour Code.
Dimitrov said CITUB also disapproved of the planned wage increases of 5% for public sector employees and 7.5% for teaching professionals in next year’s budget. Given the current rate of inflation, he said, these increases were unlikely to be well received by employees. CITUB will insist on a 10% pay rise for public sector employees.
A protest motorcade is planned in Sofia for Friday, starting at noon in front of Parliament, Dimitrov said. Around 3,000 people in more than 700 cars are expected to take part in the action. He said a meeting with the Finance Minister was expected on Friday morning.
