Transport Minister: Bulgaria Reaffirms Commitment to Black Sea – Aegean Corridor Projects 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria remains fully committed to implementing the Memorandum of Understanding between the governments of Bulgaria, Greece and Romania on enhanced cross-border cooperation, Transport and Communications Minister Georgi Peev said at the Third Meeting of the Black Sea – Aegean Sea Corridor Platform, held in Thessaloniki, the ministry’s press office said on Friday.
Peev noted that the preparation of a joint project proposal aimed at securing unallocated funding under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) is a good example of the three countries’ cooperation. “Bulgaria plans to review the initial list of projects and remove those that cannot be implemented within the next financial framework for 2028–2034,” he said.
Peev highlighted the importance of private-sector participation, noting that joint investments in transport infrastructure stimulate economic growth and create new opportunities for cooperation.
He underscored the benefits of the Memorandum, which strengthens connectivity among the three countries and facilitates north-south transport links.
Peev informed participants that Bulgaria and Romania are implementing and planning a number of jointly funded EU projects, including Fast Danube and a second bridge over the Danube River between Ruse and Giurgiu.
During his visit to Thessaloniki, Peev met with EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism Apostolos Tzitzikostas. The two discussed progress on projects under the Black Sea – Aegean Sea Corridor Platform as well as Bulgaria’s infrastructure priorities. They emphasized the importance of ferry connections between Bulgaria and Romania, including the reopening of the Ruse – Giurgiu ferry service.
Commissioner Tzitzikostas accepted Peev’s invitation to visit Bulgaria in the autumn, when the two sides are expected to discuss concrete steps for implementing regional projects.
Peev also presented the country’s readiness to apply under the CEF 2 Reflow initiative for technical assistance and the construction of key railway sections. He stressed the importance of restoring direct passenger rail services between Sofia and Thessaloniki.
“Strong regional cooperation is the key to the success of the corridor, but it requires continued financial and political support from the European Union,” Peev said.
In conclusion, he reaffirmed Bulgaria’s commitment to delivering tangible results in the areas of connectivity, sustainability and regional development, the press release said.
