Balgarianovinite.com A truck driver who stopped his vehicle in the Vitinya Tunnel on the Hemus Motorway on Monday morning due to a technical malfunction was arrested after disobeying a police order. The acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, Georgi Kandev, suspects traffic sabotage.
According to the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA), the driver, who was travelling to Sofia, deliberately chose to stop his truck in the tunnel and thus disrupted traffic. When an RIA crew arrived at the scene, the driver reportedly denied them access to the truck and refused to let them tow it out of the tunnel or move it out himself. This led police to step in to restore traffic and prevent more serious problems for other drivers, the RIA said.
Interior Ministry Secretary General Georgi Kandev commented in a Facebook post later in the day that this took place on a day of intensive travel across the country and during peak hours, which “raises serious suspicions of deliberate actions aimed at obstructing traffic”.
Kandev said that instead of letting the RIA tow the truck out, the driver allegedly wanted his own breakdown service, “which had to come from the other end of the country.” The man reportedly said that his manager would not pay for roadside assistance if it was not provided by a specific company, the Secretary General added, stressing that the assistance offered by the RIA would not have required anyone to pay.
Kandev said: “The Ministry of Interior will use all available resources to clarify the circumstances of the case and establish whether intentional sabotage is involved.”
The driver was issued a statement of violation under the Ministry of Interior Act, and another one by the Road Transport Administration. An inspection was ordered into the technical condition of the heavy goods vehicle. The driver was detained for up to 24 hours. A pretrial investigation was launched in the case. The driver is currently refusing to give explanations for his actions, Kandev added in his post.
