President Donald Trump reportedly did not initially know convicted Fort Hood mass shooter Nidal Hasan was paralyzed from the waist down as his administration moved toward livestreaming his execution by firing squad.
Trump only learned that Hasan uses a wheelchair after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth publicly announced last week that the Dec. 3 execution would be made available for people to watch, two sources familiar with the discussions told CNN on Wednesday.
Hasan was shot by law enforcement during his 2009 attack at Fort Hood, leaving him paralyzed. He was later convicted of killing 13 people and wounding dozens more.
The detail reportedly made the prospect of broadcasting the execution unappealing to the president, as he weighed whether to go ahead with the idea.
The proposal has drawn criticism from members of both parties as well as some relatives of Hasan’s victims and military figures.
Trump had said he supports executing Hasan and personally approved his death sentence earlier this month, however, the president was reportedly unaware that Hegseth planned to announce a public broadcast and subsequently began polling advisers and allies over whether it should go ahead.
One source told CNN that Trump’s sensitivity to television imagery was factoring into his deliberations.
Other administration officials and congress members raised concerns that video of a wheelchair-bound Hasan being executed by firing squad could be seized upon by terrorist groups and foreign adversaries and used to portray him as a martyr.
The Pentagon itself is now reconsidering whether to show the entire execution, according to CNN. One option under discussion would allow a broadcast to begin but cut away before the firing squad opens fire.
Family members of those killed have also objected to the idea of livestreaming Hasan’s execution.
Keely Cahill Vanacker, the daughter of Fort Hood shooting victim Michael Cahill, called the livestream idea “the worst thing you can do.”
