The White House got its spin on in the hours after Press Secretary Katie Zacharia’s Tuesday debut at the briefing room podium, bizarrely describing her first presser as “powerful.”
“Today, Katie Zacharia delivered a commanding inaugural press briefing as the 37th White House Press Secretary. The briefing, which generated wall-to-wall coverage, served as a strong introduction to her tenure and highlighted the Trump Administration’s record of delivering historic successes for the American people,” the White House wrote in an email blasted out to the press in the early afternoon.
The email went on to list five points, followed by quotes from Zacharia’s remarks.
They included: “Katie opened the briefing with clear purpose;” “Katie detailed President Trump’s second-term accomplishments on costs and much more;” “Katie reaffirmed the Administration’s commitment to broader media access;” “Katie announced the continued rapid pace of President Trump’s midterms travel;” and “Katie spoke about her family and the Trump Administration’s support for working parents.”
The California mother of four was widely panned for mostly reading from a script, taking just three questions from decidedly friendly outlets, and ending the briefing after a scant 14 minutes.
Her poor performance had some taking bets on whether she would even get to former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci’s record of just 10 days in the job.
Trump defended Zacharia — who has described herself as a lawyer despite a lack of proof for her credentials — immediately following the press briefing.
Asked by a gaggle of reporters outside the White House ahead of his departure to Alaska, Trump remarked that he thought Katie Zacharia did well Tuesday morning.
“Who?” the president asked over the roar of nearby aircraft.
He then turned to look at Zacharia before looking back at the reporters.
“I thought she did very good,” he said. “I thought she was very good.”
