President Donald Trump offered some rare praise for CNN data analyst Harry Enten at a campaign rally Wednesday, rolling an old clip of the journalist profiling numbers showing the durability of his MAGA base before declaring: “He’s very good!”
Trump played the segment for supporters at his rally in Kalispell, Montana, as he sought to make the case that Republican voters remain firmly behind him heading into November’s midterm elections.
The CNN clip showed Enten highlighting polling that found Trump received 99% of the MAGA Republican vote in 2024, with his support among the same group now sitting at 98%.
“That support is really holding up strong,” Enten said in the segment. “It’s really, really strong.”
Another graphic showed 53% of Republicans naming Trump as the Republican president they most admire, compared with 18% for Ronald Reagan and 8% for Abraham Lincoln.
When the clip ended, Trump appeared delighted: “Oh, thank you. Thank you. That’s an honor. He’s very good. He may not have a job tomorrow, but these are minor details. No, he’s very good.”
It was not the first time Trump had brought Enten onto the campaign trail by video.
Days earlier, at a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, Trump played the same CNN analysis for supporters, marveling beforehand: “Of all groups, from CNN, can you believe that?” When it finished, Trump told the crowd: “Thank you, CNN!”
The praise marks an unusual turn in Trump’s long-running clash with the network, which he routinely brands “fake news.” His administration moved last month to strip CNN, MS NOW and Politico journalists of White House access, prompting a lawsuit. A federal judge has since blocked the administration from reinstating the ban while the case proceeds.
Enten’s coverage has not always been as flattering and regularly, in the run up to the midterms, his number-led segments have pointed to Trump and his certain policies, including the war in Iran, are hindering Republicans ahead of the upcoming elections.
In Montana, Trump used Enten’s numbers to pivot straight back to his pitch for Republican control of Congress.
“If you elect a Republican House and a Republican Senate on November 3rd,” Trump told supporters, “you’ll get your $5,000.”
