President Donald Trump revealed that he has asked President Volodymyr Zelensky to stop bombing Russia’s diesel refineries because Ukraine’s efforts to defeat Vladimir Putin are driving up global fuel costs.
U.S. diesel prices recently hit $6.20 per gallon, according to AAA, leaving some truck drivers paying close to $1,000 to fill up a single tank.
On his way home to the U.S. from Ireland Sunday evening, Trump told reporters on board Air Force One, “The problem I have with Ukraine and Russia is that a lot of the diesel comes, and that’s one where there’s a big up. It comes from Russia, and the Russian plants are being hit by Ukraine. And I’ve asked President Zelensky not to hit the diesel plants, refineries.”
“The diesel is being driven up by the fact that it’s having a hard time coming out of Russia. And that’s the case that hurts the world. We gotta stop it,” Trump added.
Trump did not say how Zelensky responded to his request.
Ukraine has been using long-range drones to to strike Russian oil refineries as the country continues to fight Russia for its very existence. Russian President Vladimir Putin staged a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Putin has claimed that Russia has the right to the entire eastern Donbas region, as well as southern Ukraine.
But Russia’s war with Ukraine isn’t the only geopolitical turmoil raising fuel prices. Trump’s war with Iran is also to blame, even though the U.S. imports little oil from the Strait of Hormuz.
Likewise, the U.S.produces almost all of its diesel fuel domestically at U.S. petroleum refineries, and does not import finished diesel fuel directly from Russia.
Trump also dished his take on Flock cameras while returning to the U.S., telling reporters he understands the security concerns about them, but overall, “I like them.”
