Balgarianovinite.com Grand celebrations are planned across Turkiye today, August 14, to mark the 25th anniversary of the founding of the country’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). At a rally in the capital Ankara, Turkish President and AKP leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to outline the party’s vision before more than 150,000 people, including foreign guests.
Since coming to power in 2002, the AKP has remained Turkiye’s governing political force, with an entire generation growing up under its rule.
The party was founded on August 14, 2001, by Erdogan, who at the time had the aura of a legendary mayor of Istanbul and a political martyr (in 1998, he was convicted for reciting an Islamist poem), together with other well-known figures in Turkish politics: Bulent Arinc, Abdullah Gul and Abdullatif Sener.
Under Erdogan’s leadership, the party has set an unmatched record since the beginning of Turkiye’s multi-party era in 1946, winning every general election it has contested since its founding in 2001, Turkish state broadcaster TRT Haber reported.
The broadcaster also recalled the AKP’s founding declaration, which stated: “Today will go down in Turkish political history as the birthday of the Justice and Development Party, founded by people devoted to service, and from today onwards nothing in Turkiye will be the same.”
The report highlighted a number of achievements in the AKP’s political history that have made it Turkiye’s longest-serving governing party since 1946.
The anniversary will be celebrated in all 81 provinces of Turkiye, a country of 86 million people, with a special campaign entitled “A Quarter Century with Our Nation; Turkiye, Ready for the Future”. The campaign will include rallies, performances and visual displays expected to draw thousands of people, said Faruk Acar, head of the AKP’s communications department, speaking to the Sabah newspaper.
According to Acar, the main event will take place in Ankara, at a large rally in the area of Millet Bahcesi National Park, where the AKP’s historic quarter-century journey will be presented through a light show featuring electric light bulbs, the party’s symbol, and drones and performances.
The rally will culminate with an appearance by President Erdogan. “On August 14, our president will deliver a major speech to mark the anniversary of the founding of our party,” AKP spokesman Omer Celik told reporters at a press conference in Ankara.
In his speech, Erdogan will discuss the party’s vision. Its new song will be unveiled during the event. More than 100,000 people are expected to attend, including former and current senior AKP members, MPs, party officials, foreign guests and many members of the public. The anniversary will be commemorated with a collectors’ coin.
